Pickle Chelada

Salt rim, lots of lime, plenty of ice. A michelada minus the sauce.

A Pickle Chelada is a Mexican-style chelada, beer over ice with plenty of lime juice and a salted rim, plus a splash of dill pickle brine. It has no hot sauce or tomato, so it drinks like a salty, sour beer limeade. Choose it when you want the michelada feel without the spice.

  • 1½ oz fresh lime juice (about 1½ limes)

How to make it

  1. Wet the rim of a beer mug with the lime wedge.
  2. Dip the rim in coarse salt.
  3. Fill the mug with ice.
  4. Add the lime juice and pickle brine.
  5. Garnish with a lime wedge and a pickle spear.
  6. Pour in the lager, topping up as you drink.

Bar tips

  • Use coarse or flaky salt on the rim; fine table salt tastes harsh and clumps.
  • The brine is salty too, so salt only the outside of the rim.

Make it your own

  • For a tomato-tinged chelada, add 2 oz of clam-tomato juice or tomato juice.

Drink responsibly. This one is for adults of legal drinking age. Want it without the booze? The zero-proof drinks are just as briny.
