Pickle Snakebite
Half lager, half hard cider, one shot of brine. Pub rules.
The Pickle Snakebite is the British pub half-and-half, lager and dry hard cider in one pint glass, with an ounce of dill pickle brine poured in first. The apple sweetness meets the salty brine and the crisp beer, so it tastes like a sweet-and-sour pickle in a pint. It is distinct from the Pickle Shandy, which uses lemonade.

Units
Amounts for 1, in ounces.
- 1 oz dill pickle brine (chilled, from the jar)
- 8 oz dry hard cider (ice-cold)
- 8 oz lager (ice-cold, a crisp pilsner or pale lager)
- 1 dill pickle spear (for garnish)
- Glass
- pint glass
- Garnish
- pickle spear
How to make it
- Pour the pickle brine into a chilled pint glass.
- Tilt the glass and pour in the cider.
- Top with the lager, straightening the glass as it fills so a small head forms.
- Garnish with the pickle spear.
Bar tips
- Use a dry cider. Sweet ciders plus brine taste like candy.
- Pour the cider first and the lager on top so the beer’s head sits on the drink.
Make it your own
- Add a splash of blackcurrant cordial for a briny take on the pub’s Snakebite and Black.
- Use a pear cider for a softer, rounder pint.
Drink responsibly. This one is for adults of legal drinking age. Want it without the booze? The zero-proof drinks are just as briny.
